The Advantage of Exercising with an Electric Treadmill

There are a number of exercise machines on the market today that can be used in the home. Among these are elliptical trainers, rowing machines and electric treadmills. While the elliptical trainer has many benefits, it is mainly designed for someone who is in moderate shape already. The same holds true for the home rowing machine as you need to have a degree of upper body strength to make the machine work. Treadmills on the other hand do not need any special skill or muscle to use them.

One of the best points of owning a treadmill is that it can be used by anyone. The electric models come with programmable consoles so you can preprogram in the desired speed, distance and even duration of your walk/run. Some of these models are equipped with a slow start and stop function which allows the user to gradually begin their pace and also to gradually reduce it as they end their session. If you need a machine that is more moderate in speed you can also purchase manual treadmills.

A manual treadmill’s belt or track surface will only move as long as the person using it remains in motion. If your pace slows down the treadmill slows down as well. This is a convenient feature if the individual is a senior citizen or someone who experiences very little physical activity. There is less risk of an injury due to loss of balance or too fast of a pace. However, unless you are really proficient at keeping your stride even and holding a continuous rhythm, the manual treadmill may not offer as good of a cardiovascular workout as the electric model.

Since the electric treadmills can be programmed with the speed you want to walk/run at you have to maintain that rhythm in order to continue your exercise. This means you will achieve an optimum cardio workout in the best possible time. These machines come with built in hand rails to help you balance. Many people find it more effective to hold the rail as they progress through their exercise on the treadmill. You can also have a digital readout of your distance covered as you do your walk/run.

Another great advantage to using a home treadmill for exercise is the convenience. Not only can you place the treadmill where you are most likely to use it, but you can use it any time day or night. Unlike going to a gym, there are no long lines or closing times to deter you from your exercise. You can even purchase models of the treadmill that are able to be folded and stored under a bed. This is a great feature for people who live in small spaces. Using the treadmill also gives you the benefit of being able to walk/run all year round regardless of what the weather conditions outside may be like.
